March Athletes of the Month

Congrats to Renata Kecskes and Sebastian Mirbel on being March’s Athletes of the Month! Please read their stories below.

Name: Renata Kecskes

Age:35

Hometown: Vac, Hungary

How long have you been CrossFitting? Since you opened the door 😀 Hey on that note: I’ve been waiting to be the “Athlete of the month” for almost a decade!!!! LOL

What is your favorite WOD/Exercise? Everything involving squats. My legs are pretty strong and I am flexible too so obviously I would vouch for something that makes me “rise and shine” 😉

What is your least favorite WOD/Exercise? Everything involving snatches! Once I saw this video of a hungarian weightlifter who got his elbow dislocated while he was snatching at the Olympic games. I am afraid he has got me scared for life! P.s.: I am poo at it 🙁

What is your previous workout/athletic background? I grew up as Daddy’s littel girl. Fitness has always been a huge part of my Dad’s life. ( Dad is 58 and he is still doing 1 arm pull-ups) and it is one of my greatest inheritance. I remember going to this dirty little gym with him where we were allowed to drop weights… Boom! 😀 So I pretty much grew up with chalk in my hair and the smell of sweaty, iron pumping musclemen in my nose. Later on, when I joined elementary school, I had a bite of different kind of sports: Kayaking ( I hate to paddle in cold weather so it was a no go), basketball ( I am a shorty so it was a no go again), waterpolo ( I am like a leather boot – do not like water that much, once again a no go), finally I tried handball. Woohoo that was my game! I could kick and punch all the girls on the field who were prettier than me and I hardly got caught by the referees because there was so many of us on the field! Bahaaa! I played handball for 7 years and I made it as far being a member of the “Hungarian National Junior Handball Team”

What was your first experience at CrossFit Cayman like? The intensity and the high adrenalin rush got me hooked instantly!

What results have you seen since CrossFitting? I am 35 and I don’t think that I have ever felt and/or looked better before. ( If I had, than I guess I would have been picked as an “athlete of the month” earlier hahaha). As much as I am enjoying the “cosmetic results”, I must say what I enjoy the most is that my body functions – I believe- perfectly. I may not look like Salma Hayek in my bikini but I do have practical strength that helps me run fast, jump high and also twist and punch like an action movie star!

What do you do to get yourself through a tough workout (mental thoughts, tips and tricks, etc.)? Without wanting to sound deep…I am afraid I will sound deep, so kids buckle up! Each time the clock goes 3,2,1…Gooo, my little inner demons start to mess with my head: Am I strong enough to lift up that bar from the ground? Am I fit enough to push myself through this? And whenever I get into the groove and pick up that bar, I win! Whenever I start to sweat, I feel like I am sweating those demons out of my system. No more toxic self-doubt but self awareness, self-respect and self-confidence. When I finish a workout that leaves me shaking, I know more about myself. Muscle mass does not always equal strength. Strength is understanding that your power is both physical and emotional. When all fails, I just ask Nick Rogers to take his shirt off 😉

What’s your favorite aspect about working out at CrossFit Cayman? We have members whom are from all walks of life. Some are older, some are younger. Some are beginners some others are more advanced. We may not all are as lean as Aaron Bernardo but I believe whenever we open the door of CrossFit Cayman, our heart beats to the same rhythm. I think this is my favorite aspect… to be surrounded by people who are on the same mission like me 🙂

What advice do you have for someone thinking about joining CrossFit Cayman? Pop a few fat burners for energy and come down to the gym! We will have fun 😉

Age: 28

Hometown: Port Louis, Mauritius (google it – It’s beautiful there)

How long have you been CrossFitting? 3+ years

What is your favorite WOD/Exercise? Anything gymnastics

What is your least favorite WOD/Exercise? Anything involving squat cleans or barbells.

What is your previous workout/athletic background? I was in a swimming club for a few years in my teens, but for the past 6 years in Cayman, I’ve been playing beach volleyball literally everyday.

What was your first experience at CrossFit Cayman like? Honestly, coming in and seeing how intense the work out was, I felt quite nervous/intimidated (can I do this? Is this really for me?)  I think back to my first group class/WOD – it was filthy fifty – I died!!! haha.  But you know what, it was the best work out I’ve ever had till then! I thought to myself; I have to stay, I have to get better at this, learn these new movements, move better and get fitter – I was hooked!!!

What results have you seen since CrossFitting? In numbers? (sorry accountants love numbers) ; Since I started, I gained about 10 pounds and dropped 7% body fat. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in!! I’m a much better beach vball player (jumping higher and being faster around the court is definitely a direct result of CrossFit)

Getting my first muscle up was a HUGE milestone and I’m currently learning how to do handstands – it’s crazy how much more I can do now vs 3 years ago and there’s so much more to learn still… really enjoying the process of getting better, faster, stronger!!!

What do you do to get yourself through a tough workout (mental thoughts, tips and tricks, etc.)? I try to have a planned set of reps and try to stick to them and I also try to limit the rest to 10 seconds max, then let’s go!!!

What’s your favorite aspect about working out at CrossFit Cayman? At CrossFit Cayman, you’re working out to try to get a good score/time but that’s not what’s most important – you’re being taught how to move ‘well’ and perform the movements correctly by the coaches (who know what they are talking about).  And let’s not forget the awesome friends you get to work out with!!!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about joining CrossFit Cayman? Do it! You’ll get the best work out you’ve ever had, make friends and even get fit at the same time!!
